Dear Diary,
It has been a week and it’s only Wednesday! On Monday I FINALLY got my drains out. I could not be happier to have them out. I stopped getting caught on drawer and door handles and I could stop taking the antibiotics that gave me diarrhea and lastly no more having to strip & empty the drains. I thought life was amazing then came Tuesday…
I had an appointment with my oncologist and he had the BEST NEWS! NO CHEMO!!! I do not need to chemotherapy, my lymph nodes were negative for cancer and because of my mastectomy I don’t need radiation. I am officially cancer free!!! My first reaction was thank god I can keep my hair appointments and I won’t lose my hair. My doctor asked how I felt and examined me. He was very surprised as how well I’m healing. He couldn’t believe I had a bilateral mastectomy and immediate reconstruction 2 weeks ago. Most patients are super slow to get around, have severe bruising and are basically still feeling shitty. Wolverine strikes again!
Today I had my 2 week check with my surgeon’s nurse practitioner and she is also very pleased with how my foobs look. I literally have zero bruising and my sutures all look great. I’m starting to get some feeling back. She said I’m on track and doing a little better than most patients. I was cleared to start raising my arms and some stretches. Next week I’ll start physical therapy.
Overall I feel good. I am not 100% but I feel like I’m a solid 75%. My left arm (the one with the lymph node removed) feels like your mouth does after the dentist. It feels puffy, numb, tingly. Eventually that will go away. My nerves are beginning to repair themselves and every so often I’ll just get a zap and shooting pain in my chest. Also I’m at the point where my skin is healing and literally everything feels itchy even though the fabrics are super soft. I’m feeling a little sore especially in my lats and shoulders but that’s ok, I’ll continue healing and it will take time. We all know I am impatient but I just have to keep perspective…I put my body through the toughest surgery it’s experienced and I’m still doing better than I should be. I just need to take the win. -G
